Weekly Update Sept. 19-23, 2011

Thank you for another successful week!  Arrival and dismissal procedures improve daily.  We appreciate your continued flexibility.  Students are still working hard on classroom procedures and expectations.

Last week we started Reading Street and read When Charlie McButton Lost Power.  You should have received login information for the Pearson Success Net website.  Most of the reading materials used in class, including the weekly reading selection, can be found here.  I encourage you to browse the website with your child to practice weekly skills and strategies.  On Friday, we took the Unit 1 Week 1 Reading Street test.  The test is divided into four sections:  vocabulary, phonics, comprehension, and written response.  Each section is taken as a separate grade and is weighted differently in Progress Book:

·        Vocabulary          20%
·        Phonics               20%
·        Comprehension          50%
·        Other               10%

The test was taken in a whole group format to model test-taking strategies.  This week we will follow the same format.  However, by week three, students will complete the assessment independently.  All three grades will be recorded, but the Week 3 assessment will allow you to see your child’s strengths and areas for improvement.  The Family Times newsletter is a great resource for review and also includes weekly spelling words.  Our next story is What About Me?

Nightly homework consists of math review and 20 minutes of reading.  Continue working on math facts as well.

Scholastic Book Orders were sent home in the Friday folder.  Online and paper orders are due FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23.
