Week of October 10-14, 2011

Take advantage of a free online spelling resource, http://www.spellingcity.com/.  Weekly spelling words have been uploaded to the website and students can access the list and practice their words by playing games or taking quizzes.  To access the spelling lists, follow these easy steps: 
  1. Click “Find a Link” on the toolbar at the top of the page.
  2. Search “Natalie Crawford” as the teacher name.
  3. Click on the spelling list you want to use.  This week’s story is Rows and Piles of Coins. 
  4. Choose from any of the buttons at the bottom of the list to review the words.

Below are the reading categories you will find in Progress Book, as well as how each section of the weekly Reading Street test will affect your child’s grade:

Math assignments are also broken down into categories: 
Ø      Unit Tests          50%
Ø      Quizzes          20%
Ø      Other (Homework, etc)          20%
Ø      Fact Tests          10%

Everyday Math Unit 2 focuses on adding and subtracting 2- and 3- digit numbers.  We are working on ballpark estimates, the partial-sums algorithm, and the trade-first method of subtraction, as well as solving number stories.  Completing nightly homework is important for review.  Continue practicing math facts to improve fluency too!  The Unit 2 math test will be Tuesday October 18.

Weekly Update October 3-7, 2011

On Wednesday, all third graders will take the Reading Ohio Achievement Assessment.  It is important that your child get a good night’s sleep, eat a hearty breakfast, and arrive to school on time. 

Please continue to access www.pearsonsuccessnet.com to review important reading skills and concepts.  Spelling words are located on the bottom of the Family Times letter and on this website:  http://www.westcler.org/wv/corotisd.  For additional spelling practice, you may wish to try http://www.spellingcity.com/.  Below are the reading categories you will find in Progress Book, as well as how each section of the weekly Reading Street test will affect your child’s grade:

The Unit 1 math test was sent home on Friday.  Please review the test with your child and continue practicing math facts to improve fluency.  Interim reports will be sent home on Friday 10/7.  Remember that the first two reading tests were taken together and the third was taken independently. 

On Tuesday we will have our first Social Studies quiz covering the compass rose and citizenship traits.  A blue study guide was sent home, as well as an email containing the study guide as an attachment.
